Pope Francis on Sunday called for a quick and peaceful solution to the crisis in Niger.
“I support the efforts of the world community to find a peaceful solution. It must be found as quickly as possible, since everyone is interested in this, ”the pontiff said, addressing the believers. “I watch with concern what is happening in Niger (…). I call for peace and stability in the Sahel,” Pope Francis added, quoted by the European media.
At the same time, it is reported that the rebels of Niger held talks with an ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African) delegation. However, these talks “did little,” the Associated Press reported, citing an official source.
The discussion lasted about two hours, the delegates spoke of their intention to find a peaceful solution. For the first time, the leader of the rebels, the head of the presidential guard, General Abdurakhman Chiani, took part in the conversation, who rejected previous proposals for negotiations.
The AP calls the meeting ECOWAS’ latest diplomatic effort to resolve the crisis. The community is ready for a military operation in Niger.
Recall that in Niger, the military removed President Mohamed Bazum from power and refuse to return his freedom.
