The states of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) are ready to send troops if the diplomatic settlement in Niger fails, constitutional order will be restored by any means. This statement was made by the commissioner for peace and security of the organization Abdel-Fatau Musah, reports Reuters.
The Commissioner stated that ECOWAS was ready to “do its duty” if the negotiations did not lead to a result. “We will enter Niger with our troops, equipment and resources to ensure the restoration of the constitutional order. If other democratic partners want to support us, you are welcome,” Musakh said.
Despite this, the representative of the bloc stressed that ECOWAS still hopes for a diplomatic solution to the current situation. He argues that the rebels are only pretending to be ready for negotiations, and are also looking for reasons to justify their actions.
The announcement was made during a meeting of ECOWAS Chiefs of Staff in Ghana after the organization began activating its reserve forces to confront Niger.
