The losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since February 2022 have exceeded 150 thousand people killed and wounded. This was reported by The New York Times, citing Western officials and analysts.

According to media reports, now the issue of troop recruitment is acute for the Ukrainian command. Due to heavy losses during the counter-offensive in the south, as well as to protect other sectors of the front, in particular near Kupyansk, Ukraine needs to significantly replenish the ranks of its armed forces.

However, the problem is exacerbated by the fact that persons subject to mobilization give bribes to military registration and enlistment offices to avoid military service and try to leave the country, the newspaper writes. The media cites data from the Ukrainian border service, which daily detains an average of 20 people trying to illegally travel abroad.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is trying to resolve this issue, which is why he announced the resignation of the heads of regional military registration and enlistment offices the day before amid reports of corruption. However, they do not believe in the effectiveness of this measure in Ukraine, the newspaper notes, citing the opinions of local residents and the military, who note that corruption in the military registration and enlistment offices has long been known and “those who want to avoid mobilization will do it anyway.”
