The World Health Organization, amid reports that British residents are rapidly becoming infected with a new subtype of coronavirus, announced the rapid spread of a new variant of EG.5 “omicron” in the world.
The EG.5 strain (Eris) was categorized as Variants of Interest (VOI). The WHO reported that during the week of 17 to 23 July, the global prevalence of EG.5 was 17.4% versus 7.6% for the period of 19 to 25 June.
In turn, Rospotrebnadzor noted that the variant of the Eris coronavirus in Russia has so far been represented by only isolated cases, but there are risks of complicating the epidemic situation. The first cases were identified back in April in Moscow, the Moscow region, St. Petersburg, the Magadan and Irkutsk regions, the Krasnodar Territory, as well as the republics of Buryatia and Khakassia.
Experts also listed the symptoms of the disease with a new strain of coronavirus. These are cough, runny nose, fever, sore throat and chest tightness. “In immunocompromised people and some susceptible individuals, the disease can lead to more severe consequences,” Rospotrebnadzor warned, calling Eris a little more “competitive” than other SARS-CoV-2 genovariants.
Currently, EG.5 has been identified in 51 countries, and is widely distributed in China, the USA, the UK, as well as in selected countries in Europe and Asia. The first cases of Eris infection were recorded on February 17, 2023.
