Only the US and China are participating in the new space race. This was stated by the head of NASA Bill Nelson at a briefing on NASA’s preparations for a manned flight to orbit the moon as part of the Artemis-2 mission.
He excluded Russia from the list, noting that it is not capable of landing astronauts on the moon in the near future, which means that it does not participate in the race.
“I don’t think that many people will now say that Russia is capable of landing cosmonauts on the moon in the terms that we and possibly China are talking about, so I think that the space race is between us and China,” Nelson said, quoting leads Kommersant. He also added that he didn’t want China to get to the Moon’s South Pole any sooner.
At the same time, he wished success to the Russian mission of the Luna-25 automatic station, which is scheduled to be launched in the coming days. Recall that on August 11, Roscosmos will launch the Luna-25 station, the first Russian lunar station in almost 50 years.
According to the lunar program of Russia, the landing of astronauts on the Earth satellite is provided after 2030.
