A subvariant of the omicron coronavirus strain, Eris (EG.5.1), is spreading rapidly in the UK, writes The Independent.
Eris was first isolated in the UK on July 31, and Eris is currently the second most common coronavirus variant in that country, accounting for 14.6% of COVID-19 cases. At the same time, the country notes an increase in the number of cases of COVID-19: from July 4 to July 27, their total number increased by almost 200 thousand people.
Eris infections are also on the rise in the Indian state of Maharashtra, where this sub-variant was identified for the first time in India in May.
At the same time, according to experts, this sub-option does not yet represent a particular cause for concern in India, but it needs to be monitored. The increase in the incidence of COVID-19 may also be due to the weakening of the immunity left after vaccination and previous infections.
According to the statistics website Worldometers, more than 692 million people have been infected with coronavirus worldwide during the pandemic, more than 2 million have died.
