After 09:30 this Thursday, the members of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) They arrived at the Centro de Rehabilitación Social (CRS) Regional Sierra Centro Norte Cotopaxi, within the framework of their agenda of activities during the visit to Ecuador to verify the human rights situation in the prison system.
During the visit to that center, they plan to conduct an interview with the former Vice President of the Republic Jorge Glas. Some of his supporters gathered outside the center to support his freedom.
Outside the CRS Cotopaxi a major security operation was ordered by the National Police and the Army. Every person who entered was subjected to the corresponding search.

In addition to the members of the IACHR, Three members of the Sovereignty, Integration and Comprehensive Security Commission of the National Assembly also arrived at the center.: Patricia Núñez, José Vallejo and Xavier Jurado.
Present at the meeting with Glas will be Stuardo Ralón, commissioner and rapporteur on the Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty; Tania Reneaum Panszi, Executive Secretary of the IACHR; María Claudia Pulido, Deputy Executive Secretary for Monitoring, Promotion and Technical Cooperation on Human Rights.
Other people from the Commission’s technical team plan to meet with state authorities, civil society and visit two more prisons in the country. They also asked to meet with civil society in Quito and Guayaquil.
The IACHR delegation visits the country from Wednesday, December 1 to Friday, December 3. It plans to prepare a report with recommendations for the Ecuadorian State.
The last scheduled activity of the full delegation in the country will be on Friday at 2:30 p.m. They will meet with delegates from various public institutions related to the prison system to discuss the precautionary measure for Jorge Glas.
The Dec 31, 2019, the IACHR granted precautionary measures in favor of Glas “After considering that he is in a serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage to his rights.”
In December 2017, Glas was sentenced to six years in prison for the crime of illicit association in the case of bribes from the construction company Odebrecht.
The IACHR visits the country after the massacre that occurred in Litoral Penitentiary in mid-November, which left a balance of 65 inmates murdered, facts by which the Government of Guillermo Lasso renewed the state of exception in prisons. (I)
