The Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School (IG-EPN) reported this Thursday 2 on the possible ash fall in part of the province of Chimborazo as a result of an explosion caused by the eruptive activity of the Sangay volcano, located in Morona Santiago.

Previously, in a report released on the afternoon of this Wednesday 1, the Geophysical Institute also indicated that the Saga seismic station registered a “swarm of earthquakes” very similar in shape and characteristics, that is considered an unusual phenomenon in the volcano.

“The number of these earthquakes has been increasing steadily from 32 events per hour to 60 events per hour at the time of publishing this report. It has also been observed that these events are growing in amplitude and in the last hours they have already been large enough as to be registered in regional stations such as Puyo and Bulb (Tungurahua) ”, it was indicated in the document.

According to the entity, these signals have been regularly associated with the presence of “effusive phases” in which the appearance and growth of a volcanic dome could occur. At that time, yesterday afternoon, no surface activity was still observed in the satellite images.

However, at 04:03 on Thursday, December 2, the Saga seismic station registered an explosion, as was warned through a report from the Geophysical Institute.

From 04:40 am, satellite images showed the presence of two ash clouds, the first with a height of 10 km above the crater and the second 7 km above the mountain. The two broadcasts were in the direction of the West, indicated in the IG report.

In addition, the entity reported that consequently there is a possibility of ash fall specifically in the areas located to the west and southwest of the volcano, in the province of Chimborazo, before which it was recommended to take the pertinent measures and keep abreast of the information disclosed. in official sources.

This phenomenon has been persistent within the current eruptive period that began in May 2019.

The National Service for Risk and Emergency Management was informed that according to the monitoring carried out with a cut-off at 06:30 at the national level, there is no ash fall.

However, monitoring is maintained through the cantonal risk management units and the population is asked to take precautions. (I)
