Members of the IACHR visit prison complexes in Guayaquil

In parallel, the SNAI reported that facilities are provided for other tours in prisons in Pichincha and Cotopaxi.

Around 08:30 on Thursday 2, a delegation from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) entered the Regional prison, located 500 meters from the Litoral Penitentiary, in Guayaquil.

The group of delegates visit this morning the prison complexes of Guayaquil as part of their agenda in the country to verify the human rights situation in the prison system.

These visits by the IACHR take place after the massacre that occurred last November at the Litoral Penitentiary, which left 65 inmates murdered.

In parallel, the National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI), the entity in charge of the prison system, reported that facilities are provided for other tours in prisons in Pichincha and Cotopaxi.

In the midst of a major security operation, around 9:30 a.m., a delegation from the IACHR entered the Sierra Centro Norte Cotopaxi prison, located in Latacunga, to visit former Vice President Jorge Glas, who is being held in that prison.

In Guayaquil, in addition, the delegation plans to visit the Guayas No. 1 Deprivation of Liberty Center, as the Litoral Penitentiary is also known, and the Guayas Women Deprivation of Liberty Center. Then they will have another meeting with the governor of the province, Pablo Arosemena, and with members of civil society.

The SNAI explained that after the visits, contributions, observations and recommendations are expected from the international organization to strengthen the rehabilitation processes in the country and respect for the rights of inmates.

Last Wednesday 1, the IACHR delegation completed its first day in the country and had meetings with President Guillermo Lasso and also with representatives of various institutions.

The last activity scheduled by the delegation in the country will be next Friday afternoon, with delegates from various public institutions related to the prison system, to discuss the precautionary measure in favor of former vice president Jorge Glas.

Currently, the prison system remains under the figure of a state of exception due to the constant confrontations between gang members. (I)
