The Western allies of Kyiv decided to reorient themselves from the supply of weapons to Ukraine to the repair of military equipment. Politico writes about it.
According to media reports, after 17 months of hostilities, Ukraine has accumulated a “staggering and diverse” arsenal of equipment that needs to be repaired. In particular, German tanks, American howitzers, Italian air defense systems, as well as British, Polish, Canadian, French and Czech vehicles need regular repairs. The West decided to help Kyiv in its repair, as well as in the search for parts for damaged weapons and vehicles, the newspaper said.
The publication cites the words of US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Supply William Laplante, who said that repair enterprises are already being created in Europe, the repair manual and instructions for use are being translated.
Laplante leads a group that solves the problem of maintaining the equipment used by Ukraine in working order. The group reportedly meets regularly with the Ukrainian military to discuss what parts and spare parts they lack to repair the equipment.
The newspaper also notes that the level of readiness of equipment remains a serious problem for Kiev – the Armed Forces of Ukraine use weapons and equipment that either remained from post-Soviet times and have been gathering dust in warehouses for a long time, or weapons from other countries that are unusual for them. At the same time, the repair is complicated by political and financial contradictions. For example, earlier Germany and Poland could not agree on the opening of a repair center for Leopard 2 tanks in Poland due to disagreements between the allies over the cost of work.
