Flooding in the Krasnodar Territory was partly caused by the development of river floodplains. The head of the region, Veniamin Kondratiev, wrote about this on his Telegram channel.
He also added that he shares the opinion that flooding could have been avoided if the riverbeds were regularly cleaned. However, due to the development of floodplains, “there is simply nowhere for the water to go,” and it is necessary to create a system of storm collectors and drainage channels, the governor said.
He acknowledged that this is “a lot of money”, but “today it is a necessity.”
Earlier today, the head of the region arrived in the Tuapse district, where the state of emergency is in effect. According to the authorities, 228 yards and 84 houses were flooded there because of the downpours; in the village of Novomikhailovsky, 16 houses remain without electricity, including seven apartment buildings.
According to the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations, the day before, due to heavy rains in the Tuapse district, the water level in the Nechepsukha and Psebe rivers rose. More than 100 local residents were evacuated from the flood zone. At least five people died as a result of the disaster. On this fact, a criminal case was opened under Part 3 of Art. 109 of the Criminal Code.
In the meantime, according to the press service of the Sochi administration, rain and thunderstorms are predicted in the city in the near future and until Monday morning. Authorities urged residents to refrain from relaxing near the water.
The day before, the head of Sochi, Alexei Kopaygorodsky, transferred all city services to an enhanced mode of operation in connection with the expected rainfall in the second half of Saturday.
