In May 2023, 152.7 thousand people died in Russia, which is 5.7 thousand (or 3.9%) more than in the same month last year, according to Rosstat data.
Before that, the year-on-year increase in the number of deaths was recorded in March 2022 – then it amounted to 5.1%. In April 2023, Rosstat reported a decrease in the number of deaths by 7.3% in annual terms, in March – by 21.1%.
Infant mortality in Russia as a whole decreased by 10% in annual terms to 457 people.
Rosstat also recorded an increase in the number of births. In May 2023, 104.5 thousand children were born in Russia, which is 1.37 thousand (or 1.3%) higher than in the same month a year earlier. The last time the increase in the number of births was recorded in January 2023, it amounted to 417 people (or 0.4%) in annual terms.
The natural population decline in May amounted to 48.2 thousand people, which is 10% higher than a year earlier, follows from Rosstat data. According to the results of January-May, the natural decline in the population amounted to 264.3 thousand people against 246.8 thousand in the same period in 2022.
