China, in response to NATO’s assertion that Beijing is challenging the alliance, announced its intention to defend its interests in the Asian region, the Chinese diplomatic mission to the European Union said in a statement.
“We openly tell NATO that China will firmly defend its sovereignty, security and development interests, and we also strongly oppose NATO’s eastward expansion into the Asia-Pacific region. Any action that harms China’s legitimate rights and interests will be resolutely rebuffed,” the embassy said in a statement.
Chinese diplomats also expressed concern over the bloc’s actions “in the context of the current deteriorating international security situation.” According to the Chinese side, NATO “does not think about its own responsibility”, increases confrontation and tension with statements in the field of nuclear energy.
NATO, in a communiqué issued during the Vilnius summit on July 11, said that China’s “ambitions and coercive policies challenge the interests, security and values” of the alliance.
