Snoring is dangerous because it can lead to the development of serious diseases, including diabetes or coronary disease. Cardiologist Olga Kotolupova warned about this, radiosputnik writes.
She explained that, as a rule, the cause of snoring is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome – people periodically stop breathing in their sleep, as the muscles of the upper respiratory tract not only vibrate, but sometimes completely close. As a result, breathing is interrupted, which leads to an increase in carbon dioxide levels and a decrease in oxygen in the blood. The brain has to interrupt rest and partially activate in order to regain control over the muscles of the pharynx and open the airways, the doctor added.
She noted that sleep apnea can lead to the development of diseases such as arterial hypertension, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and ischemia. Sleep apnea can also cause type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
