NATO allies agreed to simplify the process of Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance. This statement was made today by the Secretary General of the organization Jens Stoltenberg.
“We reiterated that Ukraine will become a member of NATO and agreed to lift the requirements for an action plan for membership in the alliance,” Stoltenberg said. He clarified that instead of a two-step process, it would be a one-step process.
Stoltenberg stressed that the invitation to Ukraine to join NATO will be when the allies come to the conclusion that all conditions are met.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that NATO countries are probably not ready to invite Ukraine to NATO or make it a member of the alliance. According to Zelensky, a situation in which there are no specific deadlines for either one or the other is absurd and unprecedented. He stressed that “some strange wording about ‘conditions’ is being added even for inviting Ukraine” to the bloc.
According to Zelensky, “uncertainty is weakness.”
Recall that the NATO summit started today in Vilnius. The day before, Stoltenberg said that NATO member countries had almost finished work on a joint communiqué on Ukraine.
