US authorities support Turkey’s bid to join the European Union (EU), but separate the issue from the process of Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a White House National Security Council (NSC) spokesman said.
Thus, he commented on the statements of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who linked the prospect of approving Stockholm’s application for NATO membership with the removal of obstacles to Ankara on the way to the European Union, TASS reports.
“The United States has always supported Turkey’s aspirations for EU membership and continues to do so. Turkey’s membership application and process [ее рассмотрения] is a matter between the EU and Turkey. Our focus is on Sweden, which is ready to join NATO,” said the NSS official.
Recall, Erdogan, before flying to Vilnius for the NATO summit, urged Turkey to open “the path to the European Union.” “And we will open the way for Sweden [в НАТО]as they previously did for Finland,” the Turkish leader said.
