The authorities of the Sumy region of Ukraine decided to evacuate residents in a zone of five kilometers from the border, said the head of the regional military administration of the region Volodymyr Artyukh.
According to him, the regional authorities decided to do this in connection with the hostilities, RBC reports.
Artyukh stressed that in the border areas infrastructure is being destroyed and people are dying, shops, schools, and hospitals are not working. The authorities of the region added that under the current conditions it is impossible to safely bring in the most necessary food, medicines, and also to restore the destroyed objects.
At the moment, an order is being prepared on the evacuation from the five-kilometer border zone, it will be carried out with the “cover” of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Artyukh said. The Sumy authorities promise that residents who are to be evacuated will be provided with the necessary “resources and means.”
The Sumy region borders on the Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod regions of Russia. The authorities of the latter regularly report shelling from Ukraine.
