Presidential elections have begun in Uzbekistan. Polling stations opened at 8 am local time (6:00 Moscow time), the Central Election Commission of the country said in a Telegram message.
It is specified that about 10.8 thousand sites have been formed in total, 56 of them outside the country, including seven in Russia. About 800 international observers will follow the elections.
Voting will last until 20:00 local time (18:00 Moscow time).
Recall that the current leader of the country Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree on holding early elections on May 8. The elections will be held after the amendments to the constitution, which extend the term of office of the president from five to seven years. They also allow Mirziyoev to run for a third term. He is nominated by the Liberal Democratic Party and National Revival. He competes with the leader of the People’s Democratic Party, Ulugbek Inoyatov, the chairman of the Ecological Party, Abdushukur Khamzaev, and the first deputy chairman of the Supreme Court, nominated by the Justice party, Robakhon Makhmudov.
