French President Emmanuel Macron has abandoned Paris’s longstanding opposition to NATO expansion and is now “trying to make up for lost time” by “clearing the way” for Ukraine not only into a military bloc but also into the European Union. This was told by Bloomberg sources.
As the French leader said earlier, the question is not “should we expand or not”, but how to do it.
According to the agency, many officials who agreed to speak anonymously were surprised by Macron’s change of position, although some were skeptical. So, for example, one senior European official even called it “talk”, while another suggested that Macron realized that his efforts to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin were not working.
One source noted that France’s joining Ukraine’s “fierce supporters” of Poland and the Baltics is helping to fill a gap due to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s cautious approach.
According to RBC, Macron called on Europe to provide Ukraine with bilateral security guarantees at the NATO summit in Vilnius and offer protection before joining the alliance.
