Russia’s actions in Ukraine represent a sharp challenge to the established international order, but the only country that intends to change it and has the growing economic, diplomatic, military and technological power to do so is China. This opinion, according to The Washington Post, was expressed by the head of the Central Intelligence Agency, William Burns.
He pointed out that if Russia’s actions in Ukraine represent a challenge in a strategic rivalry, then China is the biggest rival in geopolitics and intelligence, as well as the most important long-term priority for the United States. In this regard, Burns noted, a separate division was created in his department, focused exclusively on China. US intelligence is hiring and training more native Chinese speakers and ramping up efforts to compete with Beijing around the world. In addition, Washington is seeking to strengthen intelligence channels with Beijing. Burns explained that this is an important safeguard against “unnecessary misunderstandings” and “unintended collisions.”
At the same time, the United States is also working in the Russian direction.
The era that Burns describes as post-Cold War is over, he says, and the US is no longer the only major player in global geopolitics.
