Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and his government are resigning due to the fact that the authorities could not agree on the issue of asylum for migrants, reports NOS.
Rutte called “very regrettable” the fact that the country’s parties could not agree on this issue. He stressed that migration is a “serious social problem” and expressed regret that his government would not be able to complete the work it had begun because of the current situation.
According to Reuters, disagreements between parties over the issue of asylum seekers led to a political crisis. Rutte’s “People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy” insisted that the flow of petitioners should be limited. However, two of the four parties that were part of the government coalition in parliament opposed such a measure. As the agency writes, the situation has escalated this week in connection with Rutte’s proposal to restrict entry for the children of refugees who left their countries due to wars and are already in the Netherlands. Because of this, families would have to wait at least two years to be reunited.
The agency points out that the need to tighten the country’s immigration policy is associated with an increase in the number of asylum applications. Last year it increased by a third, to almost 50,000, and this year it is projected to reach 70,000, exceeding the previous high of 2015.
