Ukraine is running out of ammunition, and the United States does not have enough to replenish stocks, so it was decided to transfer cluster shells to Kyiv, President Joe Biden explained in an interview with CNN.
“They are running out of ammunition, and we are low on it. And this is what I finally did: I accepted the recommendation of the Ministry of Defense – not permanently, but to allow this transitional period until we get more 155-mm shells for the Ukrainians, ”he said.
Biden stressed that the Ukrainians “need” such projectiles to prevent Russian forces from stopping their counteroffensive. The head of state noted that it was “difficult” to make such a decision, he discussed it with the country’s allies and the Capitol.
The US decision to provide Ukraine with cluster shells the day before, July 7, was announced by Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan. At the same time, he noted that Washington is aware of the risks for the civilian population when using such shells, therefore they postponed the decision to transfer them. As emphasized in the White House, Ukraine gave guarantees that these shells would be used “with caution.”
