The United States will transfer cluster munitions to Ukraine. This was announced by adviser to the President of the United States Jake Sullivan.

The US authorities understand that the use of cluster shells in Ukraine carries risks for the civilian population, so they postponed the decision to transfer them, Sullivan explained.

Washington stressed that Ukraine will use cluster munitions on its territory, minimizing the risks to its own population. As Sullivan noted, the supply of cluster munitions to Ukraine is a temporary measure. It was adopted at the time of increasing the production of conventional artillery ammunition.

The Biden adviser specified that such a decision was made in consultation with Congress, it was difficult, but met with understanding among allies abroad.

The day before, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said that the United States intends to carefully select cluster munitions if they are supplied to Ukraine, giving preference to shells with a low rate of unexploded bombs. Human rights activists, however, warned the US authorities against the supply of cluster munitions, noting that both Russia and Ukraine had already actively used this type of ammunition during the conflict.
