The European Commission (EC) has announced the approval of a package of measures for the sustainable use of key natural resources, including food systems and agriculture, including the reduction of food and textile waste.
“To throw away food on such a scale, while more than 30 million Europeans cannot afford to eat properly every day, and hunger is on the rise again around the world, is simply unacceptable,” EC Executive Vice President Frans Timmermans told a press conference.
In particular, the EC plans to require EU member states to reduce food waste by 10% in processing and production and by 30% in retail, restaurants, food service and households by 2030 compared to 2020. This is stated in the legislative proposal presented on Wednesday in Brussels.
According to the European statistical office Eurostat, the EU produced about 131 kg of food waste for every inhabitant of the union in 2020, which is estimated at 132 billion euros in losses. About a tenth of the food in households, restaurants and retail outlets is thrown away.
