French President Emmanuel Macron met with the mayors of cities that have touched on past riots. According to Huffpost, the head of state promised to take emergency measures “to restore much faster” everything that was damaged during the pogroms.
Macron says the worst is behind him and the peak of the unrest has passed, but he remains cautious in his forecasts. The presence of the police and gendarmerie in the cities will remain at the same level for the time being.
The President added that he was ready to introduce a law on a state of emergency in order to begin the procedure for restoring the urban economy as soon as possible.
The damage caused to the country as a result of the pogroms is quite large. So, according to the Union of Industrialists of France, it can reach 1 billion euros.
Recall that the riots in France began after a police officer shot and killed a 17-year-old teenager who, while driving a car, refused to stop at the request of law enforcement officers. The incident triggered a wave of overnight riots in many cities. During the week, according to the French Interior Ministry, 3,486 people were detained, of which 1,366 were in the Paris region. More than 800 policemen and gendarmes were injured.
