The Georgian authorities hope to receive the status of a candidate country for EU membership in December, said Irakli Kobakhidze, chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
According to him, the country has fulfilled all 12 recommendations of the European Commission to obtain the status. “In this case, there is not a single reason why we should not be granted candidate status. All this is documented,” Kobakhidze said at a briefing for journalists.
At the same time, he noted that the political decision on Georgia, which will be adopted in December in Brussels, is unpredictable. Taking into account the adoption of a decision with full consensus of all EU member states, “the risks are high,” the politician stressed.
According to him, if the EU refuses to grant the status to Georgia, “it will be a bad signal,” because Georgia “was worthy of receiving the status of a candidate country together with Ukraine and Moldova last year,” but “an unfair decision was made in Brussels a year ago.”
In June, EU leaders said that Georgia had implemented only three of the 12 recommendations of the European Commission required to obtain the status.
