The Ukrainian authorities excluded Zaporozhye from the list of settlements that are recommended for renaming. The decision was announced by the National Commission of Ukraine on State Language Standards.
It is noted that the decision was made in order to “calm passions and return the fulfillment of the requirements of the law to the legislative field”, and also taking into account the position of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance and other structures and politicians, Kommersant quotes.
It is specified that the list for renaming has been reduced by almost five times. It included 10 settlements: Brovary, Severodonetsk, Two Pervomaisk, Pervomaisky, Yuzhnoukrainsk, Khrustalny, Yuzhnoe, Bokovo-Khrustalnoe, Sorokino.
Earlier it was reported that the commission recommended renaming Zaporozhye along with other settlements, explaining that the name may not comply with “the lexical norms of the Ukrainian language or relate to Russian imperial politics.”
Recall that hundreds of settlements and tens of thousands of streets have been renamed in Ukraine since 2015, and as part of the decommunization policy, Soviet monuments are being dismantled and topographic objects are being renamed.
