Iran’s National Security Council approved the presence of women in the country’s football stadiums during local championship matches, Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj said.
According to the ISNA agency, a working group has been created to implement this decision, which includes representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Sports and Youth of the country, the Football Federation and special services.
“Women will attend matches at stadiums such as Gol Gokhar, Sepahan, Zob Akhan and Gadir Ahvaz. The Azadi Stadium also needs to be prepared,” Taj said.
The ban on women from football stadiums has been in place since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. They were allowed only for certain matches, for example, a friendly game with Russia in March of this year.
In August 2022, Iranian women attended a professional football match in Tehran for the first time in over 40 years. 500 women were given access to the Azadi Stadium to watch the local championship match between Esteghlal and Sanat Mes Kerman. Women had a separate sector, and they entered the stadium through a special entrance from the parking lot.
