Juan Villacís, an epidemiologist from the Salud Ambato district, explained that in the last week a slight decrease in COVID-19 cases was reported in the city.

The official indicated that 36 new cases were registered, 13 less than last week.

He added that in the hospital of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS) of the eleven beds in the intensive care unit (ICU) all are occupied, three are with COVID-19 patients and the rest with different pathologies. In addition, of the five spaces in this area of the Ambato General Teaching Hospital (HGDA), two are occupied with cases of coronavirus.

Villacís indicated that epidemiological genomic surveillance has been strengthened in the city to detect circulating variants and prevent more community infections.

He added that a patient who died last week had been infected with the delta variant. At least fifteen people close to that person are in an epidemiological fence.

People who were in contact with the citizen have also been monitored. The case was reported about twelve days ago, which was able to contain the infections in the family circle and workplace.

The official asserted that the epidemiological fences are giving the desired results. He regretted that several private laboratories have not reported on the cases that are detected and requested that they provide data on new infections to generate timely epidemiological fences.

In Quito there is a slight but sustained increase in coronavirus cases, according to the medical union

Xavier Gallegos, director of the Nuestra Señora de la Merced municipal hospital, commented that the vaccination brigades against COVID-19 will be maintained until December 10. Although, he said, the requirements of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) for its continuity will be analyzed.

He indicated that the ten brigades are in the two massive vaccination centers, but also in educational establishments and in places where they are required.

Gallegos indicated that the number of inoculations decreased. For example, municipal teams in August applied 29,000 doses per week, while in September they were between 5,000 and 6,000. (I)
