The US administration has intensified the discussion about sending cluster munitions to Ukraine. This could help Kyiv counteroffensive, officials say, Politico writes, citing unnamed sources.
The media notes that such ammunition “may become one of the many tools that will make the Ukrainian campaign more successful.” Washington admits that “Ukraine’s attempts to break through the Russian front line have reached a dead end,” the newspaper adds.
The NBC TV channel reports that we are talking about improved standard dual-use projectiles (Dual-Purpose Improved Conventional Munition, DPICM).
However, it is noted that no final decision has been made. The transfer of cluster munitions to Kyiv was opposed by 14 Democratic senators, who are confident that “the humanitarian costs and damage to the unity of the coalition from providing cluster munitions will outweigh the tactical advantages.” They urged the President not to approve this decision.
The White House has not yet commented on the information.
Earlier, Reuters reported that the Ukrainian government requested the MK-20 cluster bomb from the United States, and Turkey began supplying Ukraine with US-designed cluster munitions. At the same time, Ankara denied these data.
