Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed al-Sahhaf said that the country’s authorities are demanding that Sweden extradite Iraqi immigrant Salvan Momik, who previously held a rally with the burning of the Koran in Stockholm. This is reported by the agency INA.
Baghdad intends to demand extradition to convict Momik for desecrating the Koran.
According to local media reports, Faik Zaydan, chairman of the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council, initiated proceedings against Salwan Momik for desecration of the Koran. He instructed to expedite the procedures for requesting his extradition and sentencing in accordance with Iraqi law.
The day before, 37-year-old Momika, with the permission of the police, held a rally near the Stockholm Cathedral Mosque in the city center. The man tore out pages from the Koran, wiped his shoes with them, then put bacon in the book and set it on fire. Later, the police filed a report on the case of inciting religious hatred and violating the ban on making fire.
After the action, more than a hundred Iraqis gathered near the building of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad and entered the territory of the diplomatic mission. Dissatisfied demanded the expulsion of Swedish Ambassador Jessica Svardström in protest.
