If earlier it was believed that aspartame was safe for humans – subject to moderate use, now they want to add it to the list of suspected carcinogens. According to Reuters, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the WHO, plans to list this substance in July as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” Reuters writes about this.
It should be understood that this does not mean that aspartame will now be officially banned. The agency’s decision should simply indicate the potential danger. The WHO and FAO Joint Committee on Food Additives must determine the safe dose of the sweetener.
We add that aspartame is very sweet – 1 tablet can replace 3-4 teaspoons of sugar. And aspartame should not be heated or added to hot drinks and dishes – it is thermally unstable. The substance is loved by producers for its cheapness, in addition, its production does not require as many resources and efforts as when growing cane and sugar beets. And it does not have specific flavors, like other sweeteners.
