The US administration believes that Sweden has met all the conditions for joining NATO. Vedant Patel, deputy head of the State Department press service, said that Washington still advocates that Hungary and Turkey immediately ratify the documents on Sweden’s accession to the alliance, despite the “disrespectful and insulting” Quran burning in Stockholm.
Patel explained that the country’s authorities have complied with all the conditions under the tripartite memorandum that was concluded with Finland and Turkey. Washington sees Stockholm as a strong, reliable security partner that shares the values of NATO.
Recall, earlier today in the center of the capital of Sweden, with the permission of the police, an action of burning the Koran was held.
We add that since May 2022, Turkey has been blocking Sweden’s entry into NATO, demanding, in particular, the extradition of Kurdish activists accused of terrorism who received political asylum there. In Stockholm, they claim that they have fulfilled all the conditions of Ankara on the basis of a memorandum. As for the issue of extradition of specific persons, it should be decided by the court, since this is outside the competence of the government.
Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that his country was not yet ready to consider the issue of ratifying the Swedish application to join the alliance. In particular, the Hungarian government expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that in recent years, Swedish politicians have regularly made unfounded accusations against Hungary of retreat from democracy and demanded the blocking of EU funds due to it.
