NATO is ready to defend its borders from any threat from Russia and Belarus after the country received the founder of Wagner PMC Yevgeny Prigozhin, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.
According to AFP, Stoltenberg noted that “it is too early to draw any final conclusions about the consequences of the fact that Prigozhin moved to Belarus”, but “most likely, part of his forces will also be in Belarus.”
“We sent a clear signal to Moscow and Minsk that NATO exists to protect every ally and every inch of NATO territory,” Stoltenberg said.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, who was also at the NATO meeting, warned that if Wagner sent forces to be based in Belarus, then all neighboring countries “would face an even greater risk of instability.”
Following the meeting in The Hague, Stoltenberg said that NATO should not underestimate Russia in connection with the situation around the Wagner PMC. Despite the fact that what happened is “Russia’s internal affairs,” the alliance should support Ukraine even more, he stressed.
