Alexander Lukashenko said that it “was painful for him to watch the events” that took place in the south of Russia, many Belarusians also took them to heart, because “the fatherland is one.”
He announced this at an event dedicated to the presentation of general’s epaulets, BelTA reports.
“I gave all orders to bring the army to full combat readiness,” he said.
Lukashenka also noted that he is making “tremendous efforts” for “life without war.”
Recall that on Saturday the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don was captured by the PMC Wagner. This happened against the backdrop of statements by Yevgeny Prigozhin about allegedly inflicted by the Russian Armed Forces missile and bomb attacks on PMC camps – this, however, was denied by both the Ministry of Defense and the FSB. As a result, a criminal case was opened against Prigozhin for organizing an armed rebellion. In turn, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the actions of the “Wagnerites” a criminal adventure.
Later, the press service of the President of Belarus reported that Alexander Lukashenko held talks with Prigozhin and he accepted his proposal to stop the Wagner movement in Russia and take further steps to de-escalate. As Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated after that, Prigozhin would leave for Belarus, and the criminal case would be dropped.
