The Zonal 6 undersecretary of the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP), Luis Mario Barzallo, filed a complaint with the Azuay Prosecutor’s Office for an alleged crime of terrorism on the Cuenca-Molleturo highway, the main highway that connects the provinces of Azuay and Guayas.

In this case, the only evidence that has been made public so far on social networks is a video in which a hose is observed on some rocks, where they presume that someone tries to filter water to cause damage in the kilometer via Cuenca-Molleturo, that for now remains closed by the constant landslides of material and rock falls. One of those incidents even resulted in the death of a person in a car.

According to Barzallo, weeks ago they already made public that “supposed community leaders” would be “encouraging” the saturation of the slope so that the rocks fall from the top of an elevation.

He said he had strong evidence of the apparent crime and even had some names of alleged perpetrators, but he kept them confidential.

In turn, the MTOP official affirmed that water was spread “in great quantity” and that in his possession he has audios where it is heard that explosives had been placed “in order to generate a total detachment of the fragmented material.”

For his part, Teófilo Parra, an MTOP worker, also filed a complaint because he was allegedly attacked. Upon reaching the top of the mound of earth, he took photos of the place. When he was about to hit the road, he was stopped by a group of people who attacked him and took his cell phone from him.

Regarding the request of some residents to demand the presence of police and military in the conflict zone, the governor of Azuay, Matías Abad, commented that they will evaluate the situation.

On November 26, Marcelo Cabrera, head of the MTOP, released videos of the alleged bad practices at km 49 of the road.

Likewise, in recent days, the MTOP announced that a significant investment would be earmarked for a comprehensive work on km 49, in addition to the start of work to improve the road at five critical points. (I)
