The Finnish authorities have confirmed media reports regarding the closure of the border for tourists from the Russian Federation starting from Friday, September 30th. Earlier it was reported that the corresponding decision would be made the day before, on September 29.

According to Finnish media, this decision is supported by both the government and parliament: the majority of deputies (63 among government parties and 57 among opposition parties) said they support an immediate ban on entry for Russian tourists.

According to some reports, entry restrictions will resemble coronavirus. Entry will be allowed to those who intend to visit close relatives and who enter for the purpose of study, work. Also, the restrictions will not affect diplomats and oppositionists. It is assumed that the flow of incoming people can be reduced by half.

Last week, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said that Helsinki had made a fundamental decision to ban Russian tourists from entering. The country also plans to limit transit through its territory to other EU countries, the possibilities of which are readily used by Russian tourists.

Finland remains the only EU country with which Russia has an open land border. Earlier in September, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland restricted entry for Russians, and the European Commission noted the simplified receipt of visas.
