A petition to the United States has appeared on the website of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asking him to transfer nuclear weapons to Kyiv. To date, this petition has received more than 200 votes.

“Return nuclear status to Ukraine, officially announce the withdrawal from the Budapest Memorandum, but after the United States provides us with nuclear weapons (ask for them from the United States),” the petition reads. It argues that the possession of weapons of mass destruction is necessary for the “nuclear deterrence of Russia.” In order for the President of Ukraine to consider the petition posted on his website and give an answer to it, it must be supported by 25,000 people within 90 days.

The initiator of the petition, Andriy Gasai, is known for posting on the website of Vladimir Zelensky on August 18 a petition to “rename Ukraine to Kievan Rus, and call Russia Muscovy.” This petition was supported by more than 70 people.

Zelensky himself on the eve argued via video link to the participants of the meeting of the UN Security Council that Russia does not have the right to possess nuclear weapons. In February 2022, the President of Ukraine, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, admitted that Kyiv could revise its obligations under the Budapest Memorandum, which provided for the renunciation of nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees.
