The situation in Ecuador, with regard to early elections, once again shows scenarios of terror for our government, since candidacies and offers, in general, are presented in such an irresponsible way that it is frightening that the ethical crisis in the country will accelerate. .towards an abyss from which we can no longer get out. The few contenders for positions in the executive and legislature are disreputable because of what they have already shown: ignorant, prone to corruption and unable to think about the country, since they see elections as an opportunity to take over the affairs of state and country. management by the will of justice.
There are even those who aspire to the position of President of the Republic, but they cannot think for themselves because, as the backbone of their offer, they propose that the main ‘advisor’ of the Presidency, in case they win it, should be a former president who is now on the run from justice and that, that there is a minimum of institutionalized legality in our country, he was behind bars. The cheapness of the offer casts a smokescreen over the rationality of the voters, in plain sight and with the patience of everyone, which shows how failed the State Election Council is, in which a large part of the population does not trust.
Looking at something from afar allows us to better understand exactly what, without distance, seems confused, cloudy and insoluble. That is why it is important to think about what the Ecuadorian writer Mario Campaña, who lives in Spain, proposed in the manifesto “Elections 2023: a call to Ecuadorian political parties” (loscronistas.net). I cannot guarantee that all the proposals in this manifesto are achievable and that they are a way out of the hole in which we live, but they are a contribution that as a community we take care of changing the present of our country.
The election campaign for the presidential binomial will be moved more than a month in advance
Mario Campaña is open: according to him, we live in “a state of undeclared war… which threatens the very existence of the country.” There are, to support this claim, unpunished violence such as assassinations and violence against women. How worrying is the “frequent criminal behavior of political representatives and certain high public officials”. We have started tolerating criminal acts as part of politics. Campaign sees that we have laws that prevent this, only that our country “lacks moral and legal sense in the political system”.
What the Campaign demands from political parties is an “express, formal, unlimited and irrevocable commitment to the legitimacy of the country”. This, which is basic in other societies, is a necessity in today’s Ecuador in order to avoid falling into the barbarism of violence and robbery. Can our parties today not support those accused, prosecuted or convicted civilly or criminally, as the Campaign demands? Can we as citizens achieve “that no party, by action or inaction, violates the rule of law, but, on the contrary, demands the supremacy of the law, before the will of an individual or a group”? That’s right, we live in tragic circumstances. (OR)
