The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on June 22 adopted a resolution calling on the International Olympic Committee to prevent athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. As reported on the PACE website, the resolution was supported by 71 delegates, four people opposed, five more abstained.
In the document, PACE calls for a ban on Russians and Belarusians from participating in the Olympics, even in a neutral status. “The Assembly urges the representatives of the IOC, as well as national and international sports federations, to express their disagreement with the proposal of the IOC to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate even as neutral athletes in the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris,” the text of the resolution says.
Recall that in March the IOC Executive Committee recommended to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions under a neutral flag. It was noted that the relief does not apply to athletes who actively support the military operation in Ukraine and have contracts with the armed forces or security agencies of the two countries.
