US Congressmen Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal submitted a resolution to the US Senate calling for Russia’s possible use of tactical nuclear weapons (TNW) in Ukraine to be equated with an attack on NATO.
“We are introducing a resolution today that says that if Russia or Belarus detonates a nuclear device in Ukraine to stop a counteroffensive or break the will of the Ukrainian people, then such an attack should be regarded as an attack on NATO,” Graham said at a press conference that broadcast TV channel C-SPAN.
The adoption of the resolution, he said, “will be a signal to Russia” that the use of nuclear weapons “will lead to war with NATO.”
The use of such weapons by Russia and Belarus, “or the destruction of a nuclear facility, the dispersion of radioactive contamination on NATO territory with the infliction of significant harm to people’s lives” the authors of the resolution propose to regard as “an attack on the alliance requiring an immediate response”, including with the application of Art. 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
