The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that the wreckage found on Thursday is from the Titan bathyscaphe that went missing in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. An analysis of the wreckage showed that the deep-sea submersible suffered catastrophic damage, and all of its passengers died, US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger said at a press conference.

According to Mauger, the underwater drone found the tail of the Titan about 487 meters from the bow of the Titanic on the sea floor. Subsequently, additional debris was found. In consultation with Joint Operations Command experts, the military concluded that the wreckage was indicative of catastrophic damage to the passenger capsule.

To a clarifying question about the fate of the crew, Mauger said: “I express my condolences to the families.” “This is a tough day for all of us,” he added.

According to the preliminary version of the experts who participated in the search operation, the device collapsed as a result of implosion, that is, it was crushed under the influence of the water column. Asked when the destruction of the craft occurred, a Coast Guard spokesman said that from the very beginning of the search operation, sonars were activated, but “no noise was heard that could mean the destruction of the craft.”
