The leader of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who participated in the presidential elections held in May, may be taken into custody in the coming days as part of an investigation of 28 lawsuits filed against him.
In total, the politician could face up to 110 years in prison, mostly on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Cumhuriyet TV reports.
As the channel notes, due to participation in the presidential elections, Kilichdaroglu was not nominated for deputies and does not have parliamentary immunity. Taking advantage of this situation, representatives of the ruling Justice and Development Party, immediately after the presidential elections, took the initiative to unite the requests in parliament against the leader of the Republican Party and initiate a criminal case based on them on charges of insulting Erdogan, threats, slander, inciting hatred and ethnic discord, propaganda of a terrorist organization – the Kurdistan Workers’ Party banned in Turkey. At the same time, Erdogan’s party recalled that the author of most of the lawsuits is the Turkish leader.
Earlier, Erdogan repeatedly won such cases, and sent the proceeds from them to charity.
