Emission of steam and gases in Cotopaxi is due to intense rains, according to the agencies in charge

In a statement, the Geophysical Institute reported that there has been no change in the internal activity of the volcano or in other monitoring parameters.

The steam and gas emissions registered in the Cotopaxi volcano are associated with the transformation into steam of the intense rainfall that has occurred in the area, according to publications on social networks both by the Geophysical Institute, as well as the Ministries of Tourism and Environment , Water and Ecological Transition of Ecuador.

On the morning of this Sunday, from 11:00, the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic reported that through the cameras an emission of water vapor and gases was observed from the crater of the Cotopaxi volcano, which reached 800 meters above the summit level.

These emissions are associated with the transformation into steam of the intense rainfall that has occurred in the area in recent days. The dominant direction of the winds to the northwest and north, make the gases are perceived by climbers in the upper area of ​​the volcano.

In a statement, the Geophysical Institute reported that there has been no change in the internal activity of the volcano or in other monitoring parameters. The IG-EPN keeps monitoring the event and will inform in case of changes in the activity of the Cotopaxi volcano.
