Ecuador registers 93 cases of monkeypox; Guayas went from 25 to 37 in a week

In Ecuador, 93 cases of monkeypox have been reported, according to the epidemiological surveillance of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP). Of them, 25 were discharged and 189 contacts are included in the epidemiological fence.

In addition, a deceased patient is reported, the first case, due to complications with another underlying disease that aggravated his condition despite the treatments, detailed doctors.

The provinces with the highest number of cases are: Guayas, with 37; Pichincha, with 25; and Azuay, with 16. They are followed by El Oro, with 4; Santa Elena, with 2; Tungurahua, with 2; and Imbabura, with 2. While Cañar, Los Ríos, Zamora Chinchipe, Manabí and Loja registered one case each.

At the level of the Americas, according to the positive cases of this disease, Ecuador is eleventh below Argentina, Puerto Rico and Bolivia.

Dr. Orlando Pin explained that despite the fact that there are no longer many cases of COVID-19, people should continue to wear a mask to prevent this disease that is spread by fluids such as saliva particles, intimate contact.

“You have to be careful with those who come from abroad. The problem is the incubation period, which is 16 days. That is, you can be asymptomatic and have the disease. Then comes the second phase when you see the lesions on the skin, the vesicles when they burst are highly contagious”, he commented.

Infectologist Washington Alemán, director of the Infectious Diseases Prevention Unit, explained that there is a high incidence of homosexual patients, however, it cannot be pigeonholed, care and prevention must be maintained to the maximum.
