Ukraine could not reach an agreement with Russia, as it was constrained by the terms of the second Minsk agreement (“Minsk-2”). This was stated by the head of the office of the Ukrainian President Andriy Yermak, writes The Wall Street Journal.

Yermak noted that Minsk-2 was concluded in 2015 under pressure from the West. Under this agreement, “Moscow was given control over parts of Ukraine,” Yermak added. According to him, the terms of the agreement prevented the settlement of the conflict. He specified that everything that the Russian side “could not achieve during many hours of negotiations, it tried to achieve by military means on February 24, 2022,” Yermak added, quoted by RIA Novosoti.

In the future, Ukraine will abandon the intermediary, Yermak added. He also noted that now Kyiv plans to attract new allies to its side, including Brazil and India.

Recall, “Minsk-2” provided for, among other things, a ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the line of contact between the parties. The document also assumed the adoption in Ukraine of the status of separate regions of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The Ukrainian authorities were supposed to hold elections in these territories, taking into account the position of the representatives of the DNR and LNR.
