The logic of Russia’s actions in connection with the development of the situation in Ukraine is irreproachable from the point of view of international law and the UN Charter. This opinion was expressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with the leaders of several African states.
Putin accused the Ukrainian side of unleashing the conflict in 2014.
“In accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, we had the right to assist them, referring to the clause on self-defense,” the Russian leader explained.
According to him, this logic is “impeccable from the point of view of international law and the UN Charter.” Putin stressed that the Russian Federation had the right to recognize the independence of Donbass in full accordance with the UN Charter.
The Russian leader explained that these territories had the right to declare their independence, therefore, Russia had the right to recognize them, which was done.
“And then, having signed an agreement on friendship and interaction with them, we, in full accordance with the UN Charter, had the right to provide this assistance to them,” Putin said, adding that Kiev had repeatedly tried to solve this problem by force of arms.
The Russian leader emphasized that it is Ukraine, and not Russia, who is refusing peace talks.
