The North Atlantic Alliance has opened a new center for the protection of underwater pipelines and other infrastructure, writes The New York Times.
The organization is based in Northwood, North West London. In addition to pipelines, the center will work to protect submarine cables, which NATO believes are threatened by Russia.
“Russian ships have been actively mapping our critical underwater infrastructure. Fears are mounting that Russia could strike undersea cables and other critical infrastructure in an attempt to disrupt the life of the West,” General Hans-Werner Wiermann, who is dealing with this problem in the alliance, told reporters.
Recall that in September last year in the Baltic Sea there were explosions on the strings of two Nord Stream gas pipelines, as a result, both pipes were disabled. In NATO, commenting on the incident, they announced sabotage and promised that such attacks on the infrastructure of the allies would meet with a “strong response”.
