An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 hit western France on June 16 with aftershocks of magnitude 5.3. As a result of the tremors, buildings and infrastructure were damaged, writes Le Monde.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Network (Renass), the quake was felt in the town of Cram-Shaban in the Charente-Maritime department in the west of the country. “This is one of the strongest earthquakes recorded in the city,” Christophe Bechou, Minister for Ecological Transition and Territorial Unity, said on social media.

Authorities in Charente-Maritime, a department also in western France, said 1,100 homes were left without power due to a damaged high-voltage power line. In the city of La Lenya, several houses were declared unsafe after tremors due to cracks in the load-bearing walls.

After the main earthquake, a few hours later, residents of the western departments felt an aftershock: in the prefecture of De Sevres, it was reported that the tremors were recorded at half past five in the morning. After that, the authorities mobilized emergency workers to inspect cities to check the condition of buildings, especially those affected by the first earthquake.
