Deputies of the Polish Sejm (the lower house of the Polish parliament) approved a resolution on Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance. It was supported by 443 deputies, 2 opposed and 7 politicians abstained from voting, reports Polskie Radio.
The resolution states that the decision to admit Ukraine to NATO remains with Kiev and the members of the bloc. At the same time, the Seimas deputies believe that in the case of Ukraine, the invitation procedure can be used, as was the case with Finland and Sweden. In this regard, Warsaw emphasizes that the July NATO summit in Vilnius will be of “crucial importance.”
The document notes that Ukraine today defends not only its statehood, but also common values, such as democracy and order, based on international law. The Polish deputies also emphasize that Ukrainian troops “are becoming more and more operationally compatible with NATO forces and are gaining experience on the battlefield, therefore, from a military point of view, Ukraine’s entry into NATO will also be beneficial for the alliance.”
The Polish Senate (the upper house of parliament) approved the resolution in May.
